70 years on: None of the 26 ethnic groups in Yunnan is left behind

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the PRC, the Gateway reporters interviewed representatives of all the 26 ethnic groups across Yunnan province. Here are their ideas on poverty relief.

1. Ethnicity: Han

Project: red grape cultivation

“My 6 mu (0.4 hectare) of fruits help me earn over 150,000 yuan per year.” 


2. Ethnicity: Yi

Name: Yang Lusen

From: Dafodian village, Dali
Project: hostel

“With stable income, I no longer need to do extra jobs!”

 

3. Ethnicity: Bai

Name: Fan Jianwen

From: Guangming village, Dali
Project: walnut tree and herbal medicine growing

“Our life is getting better day by day since we inter-plant medicinal herbs with walnuts.”

 

4. Ethnicity: Hani 


Name: Li Mingxiang

From: Xin’ansuo village, Honghe
Project: cultivation and poultry production

I gain 80,000 yuan every year. I’ve never thought I can get rid of poverty before!”


5. Ethnicity: Dai


Name: Dao Zhengfu

From: Tuguo village, Yuxi
Project: pottery making

“No one wanted to make potteries before, but now it’s something everyone wants to do.”

 

6. Ethnicity: Zhuang

Project: traditional dress making

"Thanks to my mum’s skill, our life keeps improving.”

 

7. Ethnicity: Miao 

Name:Tao Chengshan

From:Cizhuba village, Zhaotong
Position: Poverty relief director

“Now we live well, dress well. I really see changes of my life.”

 

8. Ethnicity:Hui 

Name: Ma Lianjun

From: Xiadui village, Dali
Project:Hui restaurant

“I work as a chef and also gain money from investment. The life is more than satisfactory.”

 

9. Ethnicity: Lisu 

Name: Nu Shilong

From:Bujiuwa village, Nujiang
Project: spice planting

“With the road under construction, our industries will be developed very soon.”

 

10. Ethnicity: Lahu

Name: Wang Haiqing(female)

From: Nanben village, Xishuangbanna
Project:Pu’er tea provision

“New roads and houses are common, and many people can earn millions of yuan each year.”

 

11. Ethnicity: Wa

Name: Li Hong

From: Wengding village, Lincang
Project: agritainment

We had no car and proper furniture. But now, the hostel helps us make money. ”

 

12. Ethnicity: Naxi 

Name: He Liangquan

From:Lao village, Lijiang
Project:
“My old house has been repaired, and the living condition has improved as well.”

 

13. Ethnicity: Yao 

Name: Zhang Wengao

From: Manxing village, Pu’er
Project: tea cultivation

“We earn 60,000 yuan out of tea growing and animal breeding. We are no longer a poor family.”


14. Jingpo

Name: Yu Genjin

From: Longmen village, Dehong
Project: agritainment

“After running agritaiment, we can buy new houses and cars. That’s what we never imagined.”


15. Tibetan 

Name: Larong Pichu

From: Tangdui village, Diqing
Project: black pottery making

“We have over 120 pottery-making households, and each can make 50,000 yuan per each year.”


16. Bulang 

Name: Yu Shan

From: Zhanglang village, Xishuangbanna

Project: tea plantation

“There was no way to sell our tea to the outside. Now, tea has become our major revenue.”


17. Buyi 

Name: Li Wenxiu

From: Lubugebu township, Qujing
Project: embroidery

“Our arts have been sold in China and abroad. A skilled worker can earn 5,000 yuan per month.”

 

18. Achang

Name: Zhao Xingye 

From: Henglu village, Dehong
Project: tobacco and tea growing

“We dreamed to build new house. Now this dream has come true.”

 

19. Pumi 

Name: Yang Chunxian

From: Langfang village, Lijiang
Project: cultivation of Prinsepia utilis Royle

“The product sells good and we gain more money than before. The life is getting better.”

 

20. Mongolian


Name: Wang Shaohua 

From: Xingmeng township, Yuxi
Project: melon production

“With 1600 mu (about 107 hectares) of melon plantations, we live a better life.”

 

21. Nu


Name: Hai Yepu

From: Lawu village, Nujiang
Project: pig and chicken feeding

“We’ve moved into a new house, and the family income has reached 20,000 yuan per year.

 

22. Jinuo


Name: Zi Mei

From: Bapiao village, Jinghong
Project: hostel and agri-tourism

“The village has been modernized, and agri-tourism keeps bringing tourists to us.

 

23. De’ang 

Name: Zhao Yuyue

From: Dehang township, Dehong
Project: hostel and agri-tourism

“We hope to invite tourists to come and experience our ethnic culture.”

 

24. Shui 

Name: Lang Yuanqiu

From: Duzhang village, Qujing
Project: traditional folk dress making

“Traditional dress making helps protect our culture, and lift our living standard.”

 

25. Man

Name: Huang Jiakang 

From: Shuigouwa village, Baoshan city
Project: mulberry tree growing

“Today, mulberry tree growing and sericulture make us live a better life.”

 

26. Dulong

Name: Sinan Lamu

From: Shangyou village, Diqing
Project: veterinarian

“I can get an average income of 110,000 yuan per year, and all my families have been enriched.”
 

In Yunnan’s effort to eliminate poverty, none of the 26 ethnic groups in the province is left behind, and all of them are marching towards a prosperous and decent life.
